What Is Discord Nitro

People buy it expecting a better server and get a better account. The boosts are the bridge between the two, and they are lent rather than given.

Updated October 2026

Nitro is a paid subscription attached to your Discord account. It raises your file upload limit, lets you use custom and animated emoji in any server, allows a longer profile and an animated avatar, improves screen share quality, and includes server boosts.

It upgrades you, not the servers you are in.

The only part that reaches a whole community is the boosts: applying them to a server unlocks perks for everybody there, for as long as you keep paying.

The part most guides skip

The personal-versus-server distinction explains almost every disappointed purchase.

Somebody runs a server, wants better audio quality and more emoji slots for their members, buys Nitro, and finds that nothing about the server changed. That is correct behavior: the account got the perks. The server only changes when boosts are applied to it, and a single subscription includes a small number of them, far fewer than a level needs on its own.

Server levels are thresholds counted across everybody who boosted. A community reaches a level because several people are each paying, and it falls below that level when any of them stop.

That has two consequences worth knowing before buying. For a member: your boost is a donation with a subscription attached, and you can move it between servers but you cannot bank it. For an admin: the level your server sits on is only as stable as the people paying for it, which is why boost drives and perks for boosters exist.

And for anybody evaluating the purchase on features alone, the honest summary is that Nitro buys convenience — bigger uploads and emoji everywhere — rather than access. Nothing about participating in Discord is locked behind it.

What the subscription includes

A much larger file upload limit, which is the feature most subscribers actually use.

Custom emoji and stickers from any server you are in, usable everywhere, plus animated emoji.

Profile customization: animated avatar, banner, longer bio, and a custom tag on some tiers.

Higher quality screen sharing and video.

Server boosts, and a discount on buying additional boosts separately.

The tiers, and what differs

Discord has sold Nitro in more than one tier, with the cheaper one dropping boosts and some of the quality upgrades.

The tier names and contents have changed over time, so the subscription page is the source of truth rather than any article.

The practical split has stayed the same: a cheaper tier for uploads and emoji, a full tier that includes boosts.

Gift subscriptions exist, do not renew, and are the way most people try it.

Boosts, levels and what a server gains

Boosts are counted per server and levels are thresholds of that count.

Levels unlock better audio bitrate, more emoji slots, a server banner, a vanity invite link and higher quality streaming for everyone.

A level is lost when boosts expire, and the vanity invite stops working at that moment, which breaks every posted copy of it.

Boosts can be moved between servers, with a cooling-off period after applying one.

Is it worth it

If you share large files regularly, it pays for itself in convenience immediately.

If you are in several servers with good emoji, that is the second most-used feature.

If you want to support a specific community, buying boosts directly is more targeted than buying Nitro for the boosts.

If the goal is to run a better server, recruiting a few boosters does more than one subscription ever will.

What it does not do

It does not add moderation powers, roles or permissions. Those come from the server.

It does not remove rate limits on messages or exempt you from server rules.

It does not make your account verified or trusted; Discord's trust signals are based on account age and verification, not payment.

And it does not carry over if the account is banned from a server. The subscription is yours, the access is the server's.

Questions people ask about Nitro

Does Nitro upgrade my server?

No. Nitro upgrades your account. Servers improve only when boosts are applied to them, and a level needs several boosts.

How many boosts come with Nitro?

A small number on the full tier, fewer than a level requires on its own. The cheaper tier includes none.

Can I move a boost to another server?

Yes, with a short waiting period after it was applied. You cannot save an unapplied boost indefinitely.

What is the biggest practical benefit?

The upload limit for most people, followed by using custom emoji from any server everywhere.

Is anything on Discord locked behind Nitro?

No core function. Communities, voice, video and messaging all work on a free account.

What happens to perks if I stop paying?

Your account features revert at the end of the period, and any boosts you applied expire then, which can drop a server a level.
