How to Edit Close Friends on Instagram

Adding and removing people is silent. Being on the list isn't: anyone on it can tell, the moment they see something you shared only with them.

Updated 2026-10-03

How to edit close friends on Instagram: go to your profile, tap the menu at the top right, and under Who can see your content tap Close Friends. Tap Select next to anyone you want to add, or search for them; tap the button next to someone already on the list to remove them, then tap Done. Instagram doesn't notify anyone either way.

That's from Instagram's Help Center as of October 2026, which also explains the part people worry about: while adding and removing is silent, people on the list see a Close Friends label on what you share with them, and may see a green ring around your profile picture. So membership itself isn't secret from the members.

The part most guides skip

Close Friends is a single list of accounts you choose, used as an audience. Instagram's Help Center describes it as a way to share posts, notes, Reels or Stories so that only the people on the list can see them. You build it once and pick it whenever you share something meant for a smaller group.

Three rules in the Help Center shape how it feels to use. People aren't notified when you add or remove them, and you can update the list at any time. Nobody can ask to be added; the list is entirely yours. And when someone on the list views your Close Friends notes, Reels or Stories, they see a Close Friends label, so they know they're on it, and they may see a green circle around your profile picture.

There's one more detail creators tend to miss. If someone on the list likes, comments on or shares a Reel you shared with Close Friends, other people on the list can see their username and how they interacted. Inside the list, people are visible to each other in a way they aren't on a public post.

Close Friends content is, by design, seen by fewer people. A public Story is different: anyone who can see your account can open it, and its view count is what Instagram story views adds to, from your public handle. The two audiences answer different questions, and the rest of this guide is about the private one.

How do you add or remove someone from Close Friends, step by step?

Instagram's Help Center gives the same path for adding and removing:

  • Tap Profile or your profile picture at the bottom right.
  • Tap the menu at the top right.
  • Under Who can see your content, tap Close Friends.
  • To add someone, tap Select next to their name, or tap Search to find them.
  • To remove someone, tap the button next to their name so they're no longer selected.
  • Tap Done at the bottom to save.

Editing while you share a Story

There is only one list, so any change you make applies to everything you share with Close Friends from then on, not to a single Story.

Does someone know if you remove them from Close Friends?

Not from a notification. Instagram's Help Center says people aren't notified when you add or remove them. The removal is silent at the moment it happens.

They can notice later, though. Someone used to seeing your Stories with a Close Friends label, or your profile picture with a green ring, may realize that's stopped. Nothing in the app tells them why: you might simply not have posted anything for Close Friends lately.

If what you want is less contact rather than a smaller audience, other tools may fit better. Mute stops their content appearing for you without telling them, Restrict limits their interactions, and hiding your Story from specific people keeps them off your regular Stories as well. How to know if someone restricted you on Instagram compares restrict, mute and block.

How do you see who is on your Close Friends list?

Open the same screen: Profile, the menu at the top right, then Close Friends under Who can see your content. The people already on the list appear as selected, and Instagram's Help Center describes this screen as the place to both review and change the list.

The Help Center describes one Close Friends list, not several. As of October 2026, there's no documented way to keep two lists, such as one for family and one for work friends, and choose between them. People who need that usually switch the list before sharing, or use a second account for the separate audience.

If your goal is controlling who sees your followers rather than your content, that's a different setting entirely, covered in how to hide followers on Instagram.

How do you post only to Close Friends?

Choose Close Friends as the audience when you share:

  • Stories: create the Story, then on the share screen tap Close Friends instead of Your story.
  • Reels and posts: before sharing, open the audience option and choose Close Friends. The Help Center lists posts, notes, Reels and Stories as the content you can limit to the list.
  • Notes: when writing a note, choose Close Friends as the audience.

How long a Close Friends Story lasts

The same 24 hours as any Story. What happens after that, including archives and highlights, is covered in how long Instagram Stories last.

Can you see if you're on someone's Close Friends list?

Yes, when they share something with it. Instagram's Help Center says people on the list see a Close Friends label when they view Close Friends notes, Reels or Stories, so they know they're on the list, and they may see a green circle around the person's profile picture.

If you never see that label from someone, you can't tell much. Either you're not on their list, or they haven't shared anything with Close Friends since you were added. Instagram offers no screen that lists whose Close Friends you're on, and nobody can request to be added.

The label also means anything shared with Close Friends announces its own audience. That's useful when you want people to know a Story is just for them, and worth remembering when you'd rather the list stayed invisible.

Do Close Friends Stories get more views?

Fewer, by definition. Only people on the list can open a Close Friends Story, so its view count can't exceed the list's size. What it tends to get is a higher share of views among the people who can see it, since the audience is small and chosen.

Viewers are listed the same way as on a regular Story. Can you see who viewed your Instagram Story explains how to open that list and how long it lasts, and Instagram Story viewer order covers why the names appear in the order they do.

Creators often use Close Friends as a paid or loyal-fan tier and public Stories for reach. If your public Stories are the ones that need an audience, why is my Instagram Story not getting views goes through the usual causes.

When should you use Close Friends instead of a public Story?

Use Close Friends for things you'd share in a group chat: personal updates, behind-the-scenes clips, early looks at something for your most engaged followers. The label tells those people they're on the inside, which is part of the appeal.

Use a regular Story for anything meant to reach your wider audience. Close Friends Stories don't help a new follower decide whether your account is worth following, because they never see them.

On public Stories, the view count is visible only to you, but it shapes how you read your own reach and what brands see in your insights screenshots. Buy Instagram story views works on public Stories from your public handle, from 100 views up, paid from a balance funded with PayPal or crypto and never with a login; it doesn't apply to Close Friends Stories, which only list members can open. Every other guide for the network is on the Instagram page.
